About the Salsbury Restorers Society....
For several years Tom Newton and Jerry Ellis talked about why it seemed there were very few Salsbury owners at the VMBC (Vintage Motor Bike Club) meetings in Portland, IN. Tom suggested putting together a Salsbury Club so we could share parts and ideas. We started to make a list of the names of everyone who had ever talked to us about Salsbury scooters. Brian Markley then sent us a list of his California Salsbury contacts. We scanned the VMBC roster for members with an “S” for their scooter interest and soon had a list of 81 names. Tom and Jerry then put together a quick, and inexpensive, Xerox copy titled NEWSLETTER #1. By the time Newsletter #2 was ready for mailing the list had grown to 247 names. However, many of those on the list had moved or died and many Newsletters were “returned to sender” with no forwarding address.
The good news is we found enough interest to start the Salsbury Restorers Society in the year 2000. At 2pm on July 11,2001, at VMBC meet in Portland, IN, twenty seven members put down $50.00 each to become charter members. Tom Newton was elected as the first President, Dave Kyte as Vice President, Jerry Ellis as Secretary-Editor, Jaci Opsahl as Treasurer, Terry Smith as Technical Advisor, Brian Markley as Historian and Vicci Newton as SRS Parliamentarian. Members elected to the Executive Board were David Bagne, Danny Smith, Jason Smith, Rollie Hilger, Bob Martin and Bill Opsahl. Jaci began work filing the paperwork with the IRS for an EIN number and Vicci filed with her home state of Oaklahoma for recognition as a not-for-profit corporation. Photos and articles were needed for each Newsletter and Dick DeBuse and Brian Markley came to the rescue by submitting large amounts of Salsbury information for publication. Then members started contributing stories and photos and the Newsletters became a real medium for every member to share their Salsbury story. As of 2015, membership has reached 354 members in 42 states (including Alaska & Hawaii). There are also members in British Columbia, Ontario, Western Australia, France, Holland, Switzerland and Belgium. |
